Babette's Feast
"I don't want to see a Foreign Film," I complained to my friend. I wined that it would not be good and that I would not understand anything even though there were subtitles. I thought the hassle of watching the movie and reading the subtitles will ruin the movie experience. In addition, there is a different culture the movie represents, which is another aspect that might be hard to understand.
But, I was wrong.
Babette's Feast is about two older christian women who take in Babette as a housekeeper because of an important letter from a known and close friend. Babette stays with the women and takes care of everything in their house. She always is working hard and trying to please the two women. After many years, she gets the hang of the situation and knows the likes and dislikes of the two women. All the women have a bond, although it is not extremely close they know each other and connect together. By luck and a fortunate circumstance Babette wins money from a lotter ticket. Instead of leaving her current situation and doing almost anything she wants, she decides to cook a fancy meal for the sisters and other company. Babette begins to prepare her real French dinner and is truly excited about her meal. However, the other women begin to worry because this meal is something they have never seen before. They are unsure of the situation and even scared to eat the food. Although, as soon as the food enters their mouths, they begin eating like crazy and enjoying every portion of the meal.
Babette's Feast was confusing in the beginning of the movie because the plot had to be set in stone. However, as the movie developed and the characters were understandable, the movie became more interesting. It allowed me to have a connection with the characters because I cared about them and their relationship with one another. My favorite part was when Babette decided to use her money on preparing the meal for everyone because it showed that she truly cared about the women and wanted to show her culture. Babette displayed that money is pointless without people and a culture because those are aspects of life that make it important and valuable. Seeing this movie allowed me to understand a different culture and previous fears of other people. It also allowed me to see the compassion and love Babette had for other people.
