What Food Means to Me
The green Subway sign sticks out against the blue sky in the mid-afternoon and I feel my stomach grumble. I know it's time for lunch. Luckily for me, there is no one else in line when I walk in, so I can be served right away. My stomach jolts with excitement and I walk towards the sub line to pick out my own personal sub. I get to pick what precisely what I want? There will not be any added mushrooms or banana peppers without my personal consent? Alright, sounds great! Although, my first challenge comes to me.
They ask me which kind of bread I would like for my sub and I contemplate my choices. I know making decisions is important not only in my sub for lunch, but in my everyday life. I finally decide to choose Wheat, because it is a little plain but healthier than just white bread. The next step is to pick my meat, and there are many different options which I can choose. I appreciate that I can pick my own meat and that it will be my decision to make. I come up with two possible solutions that I know I personally will enjoy, Turkey or Chicken, but my final conclusion is Turkey. I make my way towards the next section of the line, picking my cheese, which consists of Cheddar, Pepper-jack, or American, which is an easy decision because Cheddar is my favorite kind of cheese. The vegetables are the next item of food to put on my sub and the variety is almost endless, but I know I can choose exactly what I want instead of having to pick out the ingredients I don't like when it appears on my plate. I come to and I decide to add lettuce, tomato, and green peppers. To add more flavors to my personal sub, I pick southwest chipotle and ranch dressing.
Building my sub represents my individuality, personal choice and independence. The sub I created is only for me and if I would give it to someone else then it wouldn't be suitable for their personal tasting. Since I made the choices for myself, it fits my needs and I will be able to enjoy every aspect of sub. Food is all about variety and having choices. The idea of making my own sub makes it extremely personal because it is appropriate to my own tasting and nutritional value. It's about making my own decisions on what I want and need. Food gives the sense of becoming independent because of the choices I am able to make on my own and not allowing other people to influence me on what I really want. I no longer have my parents or friends picking out what I want or should have, but only my own mind to make the right decision for myself. Having the choices for food is about developing the confidence to make my my own decisions, which will transfer into the rest of my life.
